Celebrating color

We met a little boy on the metro today, and he was spotted with different bright colors; it looked like paint. I asked him if he had painted today and he told me that he had celebrated Holi. His Dad us told that his pre-school celebrates all cultures, and today was India.

"The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima which comes in February end or early March. Holi festival has an ancient origin and celebrates the triumph of good over bad. The colorful festival bridges the social gap and renews relationships. On this day, people hug and wish each other, "Happy Holi.""

We should all do this.

Burlap???

A friend asked me to make a pillow out of burlap. I was skeptical that it would work/look good, but I am really pleased with the outcome. I machine stitched the cake on, which helped to really keep it in place. Then I stitched it all together before personalizing. I thought if I tried to hand-sew it with unfinished edges it would unravel. I think it would have; burlap is a very loosely woven material. I also made it a pillow cover, as I don't think stuffing would have look right. In all, I love it. Very understated.

Sea glass

Collecting sea glass is my favorite visual exercise in the summer. I've gotten pretty good at it over the years, and now my kids are in on it, especially my youngest, Gavin. It's like a treasure hunt. We always find lots of brown, then white, and very rarely we find the coveted blue glass. We have 233 pieces so far this summer, and only two more days to add to the collection.

Kim Macconnel

I am starting to think about my new inspiration for fall; pillows and paintings, etc. Last year I was inspired by Matisse paper-cuts after spending some time doing research for a project. Tonight, I googled "turkish designs" (not sure why...) and came across artist Kim Macconnel. His work is amazing; I still need to do more reading about his process. But I did come across a review that compared him to Matisse. Funny how things come full circle.

Good Dog

I set up shop at Coventry Farmer's Market, in Coventry, CT, yesterday, and it had a dog theme. Made these doggie treats just for fun. Not really for the doggies, tho.
